For this month’s Scripture Plan we are going back to reading through a book of the Bible, and back to the Gospels. The Gospel of Matthew, where we worship Jesus the King.
Introduction to the Gospel of Matthew
Unless otherwise stated the Scripture References are taken fro the Christian Standard Bible. While referring to lots of different versions in my study, I generally use the CSB Study Bible for Women on kindle.
Jesus in the Book of Matthew
Matthew introduces Jesus in verse one as the Christ (Messiah), Son of David and Son of Abraham and then gives his genealogies from David and Abraham.
This shows that Jesus is a Jew and part of the Davidic royal line, prophecied to rule forever.
In the next chapter, after Jesus’ birth, we see the first people to meet Jesus: the wise men. They make their purpose clear as they are searching for Jesus:
“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:2
The focus on Jesus as King continues as there are many references to the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus declares the laws of this new kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount and shows his authority over the physical and spiritual world when he performs miracles and casts out demons.
Worship King Jesus
As with my other Gospel Scripture Plans (Follow Jesus the Servant in the Gospel of Mark and Seek Jesus the Saviour in the Gospel of Luke) I have discovered a particular response to Jesus is seen. This time it is to worship him.
As we have already seen, the wise men sought to worship him at his birth. The disciples also worship Jesus after he walks on water (Matthew 14:33) and at the end of the Gospel, after Jesus’ resurrection (Matthew 28:9&17).
SCRIPTURE PLAN ON THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
This Scripture Plan takes us through the Gospel of Matthew in 30 days. I have chosen to make all my monthly plans for 30 days even though not all months are this length, so you can choose to do them at any time. This plan is called ‘Worship Jesus the King’ as Matthew focuses on Jesus as King and he has more mention of worship than any other gospel.

What is unique about the Gospel of Matthew?
One of the unique features of the Book of Matthew is the numerous quotes from and references to the Old Testament.
Matthew is writing mainly to Jews and aims to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. One of the ways he does this is to relate Jesus to the Old Testament events and prophecies.
“Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Mt 1:22-23).
