God has chosen us! But, what does this mean? We can learn a lot about this from the Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). In the Bible Studies with my Chosen: 30 Day with the Patriarchs Bible Reading Plan I have selected verses from Genesis 12-50 which focus on the theme chosen. As with my other plans, you can download the Bible Reading Plan for free using the form below, or you can purchase the Bible Study Guide and Workbook to help you dig deeper into the text. Let’s get started!
Chosen
The theme for the Patriarchs Bible Reading Plan is ‘Chosen’. Although the word is only used twice in these passages, the theme of being chosen by God is constant. Genesis 12 marks a new section for the book of Genesis, instead of focusing on the whole world, God chooses Abraham and continues the biblical story through his descendants.
Abraham is blessed by God and given several promises. As we journey with the patriarchs we discover a few things about being chosen.
Who is Chosen
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and their wives, are all chosen by God. Through the various stories and encounters with different characters we see that God’s plans are different to ours. The blessings, which traditionally are given to the eldest son frequently go to a younger son instead.
God knows our hearts, and has a reason for why he chooses specific people for certain tasks. We must keep our eyes on him and obey him rather than comparing ourselves to others.
We are chosen for a purpose
God chose Abraham for a purpose. God knew he was faithful and righteous and, despite some failings, was up to fulfilling the task God had set him. God speaks about why he has chosen Abraham in Genesis 18:19.
For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.
God has also chosen us for a purpose, seen here in 1 Peter 2:9.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
The promises and blessings
God speaks to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob many times, with promises that cover these four main areas:
- I will give you the land
- Make you into a great nation, with offspring too numerous to count
- All people on earth will be blessed through you
- I will be with you
The first three of these promises will not be fulfilled in the Patriarchs’ lifetimes. Abraham’s descendant, Jesus, will eventually bring a blessing to all the people on the earth. If we put our faith in him we are included among the chosen.
In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. Eph 1:11-12
What we learn about being chosen
We see from the Biblical accounts in the Chosen: 30 Days with the Patriarchs Bible Reading Plan that just because they had been chosen by God it didn’t mean that life was going to be easy for them. They often had to wait for a long time for the promises to be fulfilled, and many were not met within their lifetimes. They suffered and struggled through difficult times, sometimes caused by their own failings.
Yet God always keeps his promises, because God is always faithful. Despite our failings and interference, God’s promises will always be fulfilled.
We can trust in God to fulfil his promises. But we must have patience and faith and wait on his timing and trust that his methods may not be what we expect.

I have also written a Bible Study Guide and Workbook to go with the Chosen: 30 Days with the Patriarchs Bible Reading Plan. Here you will find a page for each day of the study. The daily worksheets use my 5L Bible Study Method: Letter, Look, Learn, Live, Love which encourages and guides us to look deeper into the text we are reading.
Each day I give a short description or question to give you a start, but please remember to look for what God is teaching you through each passage – this may be different to what I have said. That’s why there is also space for you to write your own thoughts in each section. Get your copy here!
At the end of each week I’ve written a post reflecting on what we have learned in the week’s Scripture passages, you can find the reflections here:
Week 1: God’s Promises to Abraham
Week 2: How to Trust God in times of doubt, sorrow and testing
Week 3: How to respond to God’s Promises: Lessons from Isaac and Rebekah
Week 4: What does it mean to be chosen by God?
Please pin for later or to share with others!
There’s so much to learn in 30 days with the Patriarchs. But narrowing the focus on being chosen? That’s cool! I can’t wait to follow along!
Thanks, Aryn! When I decided this was going to be the topic of my Scripture Plan for this month I wondered if it would be a bit overwhelming and difficult to do in 30 days, but when I went through the list of passages and took out the ones I thought weren’t necessary for the theme of chosen I had 30 passages! I hope you enjoy following along with the Patriarchs Scripture Plan and benefit from it.
Hi Karen, What a lovely way to do a Bible study. It’s the first time I’ve bumped into a Patriarch Scripture plan and it looks great! The theme of being chosen is very encouraging. I really love the verse in Revelation 17:14 that says: ‘… they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful’. Many blessings, Ann
Thanks, Ann. It’s always good to remember, and be reminded, that we are chosen by God. It’s so easy to doubt ourselves.
