Bible Verses on God’s Love

For my very first list of Scripture References, I thought there was no better place to start than Bible verses about God’s love.  I knew there were lots of verses about love, so when thinking about how many to include in this list I wondered what would be the ideal number. 52 came to mind – one verse on God’s love for each day of the week. A love letter from God for each week of the year!

I’ve grouped the verses into categories that give us some different ideas about God’s love for us. We’ll start with verses that tell us that love is in the very nature of God’s character.

Bible Verses on the character of God’s Love

But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them. – Nehemiah 9:17

 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. – Psalm 145:8-9

 Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.  Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. Psalm 36:5-6 

But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. – Psalm 86:15

Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments – Nehemiah 1:5

I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: “Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments.” – Daniel 9:4

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. – 1 John 4:16

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” – Exodus 34:6

 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. – Joel 2:13

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. – 2 John 1:3

Scripture References that show God’s love is eternal

The next group of Bible verses I wanted to focus on is verses that highlight that God’s love is forever. It is unconditional and never fails.

 For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. – Psalm 117:2

Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. – Psalm 136:2

Let your heart overflow with praise to the True God of heaven, for His faithful love lasts forever. – Psalm 136:26

I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself. – Jeremiah 31:3

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. – Deuteronomy 7:9

I will tell of the Lord’s unfailing love. I will praise the Lord for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to his mercy and love.. – Isaiah 63:7

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. – Psalm 52:8

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? – Romans 8:35

 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, ³⁹ neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39

Bible Verses that show how God demonstrates his love for us

The largest group of Scripture References I put together are those that show how God loves us. Many of these obviously refer to how he has forgiven us through Christ., but there are other ways God demonstrates his love too.  He protects us, saves us and rejoices over us.

God’s love is demonstrated through the death of Christ

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10 This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. – 1 John 4:9-10

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:8

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God,who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, ⁵ made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. – Ephesians 2:4-5

“For God expressed His love for the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not face everlasting destruction, but will have everlasting life.” – John 3:16

There is no greater way to love than to give your life for your friends. – John 15:13

When the extraordinary compassion of God our Savior and his overpowering love suddenly appeared in person, as the brightness of a dawning day, he came to save us. Not because of any virtuous deed that we have done but only because of his extravagant mercy. – Titus 3:4-5

God’s love is demonstrated through other actions

God also shows his love by forgiving, saving and rescuing us as well as rejoicing over us and calling us his children.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. – Psalm 103: 11-12

Help me, Lord my God; save me according to your unfailing love. – Psalm 10:26

Your strong love, O True God, is precious. All people run for shelter under the shadow of Your wings. – Psalm 36:7

Yet in the light of day, the Eternal shows me His love. When night settles in and all is dark, He keeps me company— His soothing song, a prayerful melody to the True God of my life. – Psalm 42:8

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. – Psalm 51:1

Your loyal love flows generously over all who cry out to You. – Psalm 86:5

Consider the kind of extravagant love the Father has lavished on us—He calls us children of God! – 1 John 3:1

As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. – Isaiah 62:5

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:22-23

My True God had heard my prayers and rested His hand of favour and love upon me. – Nehemiah 2:8

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. – Romans 5:5

His banner over me is love.  - Song of Songs 2:4

The Eternal your God is standing right here among you, and He is the champion who will rescue you.
He will joyfully celebrate over you; He will rest in His love for you; He will joyfully sing because of you like a new husband. – Zephaniah 3:17

Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. – 2 Chronicles 6:14

Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.” – Deuteronomy 33:12

He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. – John 14:21b

Bible Verses on God’s love as an example, encouragement or discipline

 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit,if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. – Philippians 2:1

 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. – 1 John 4:8

 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. – 2 Thessalonians 2:16

 I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,” – Ephesians 3:17-18

 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. – Ephesians 5:1-2

 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. – Proverbs 3:11-12

Bible Verses on our Response to God’s Love

 And finally, we have some verses on how we should respond to God’s love. After reading the verses about respond by meditating on his love, praising God, obeying his teaching and remaining in his love.

 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. – Psalm 48:9

 Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me! – Psalm 66:20

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” – John 14:23

 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. – John 15:9
