New Beginnings in Life
I often think about new beginnings at Easter time. The story of Christ’s resurrection is a story of new beginnings for all believers. Growing up in the UK there were lots of signs of new beginnings at this time of year, like spring flowers and lambs in the fields. So, when I moved to the Southern Hemisphere and experienced Easter in autumn I found it quite strange. How could I associate what I was experiencing in my surroundings (colder weather, leaves falling of trees) with new beginnings?
With a little bit of looking, I did find some signs in my garden. Our swan plant was covered in cocoons and new butterflies, and the ground was covered in acorns.
This got me thinking about new beginnings. We don’t always see the signs of new birth straight away (like the daffodils). Sometimes we have a promise of new birth (like the acorn) but we have to go through the winter first. And we may not even see that promise if we are not looking for it.
New beginnings can come to us in many different ways. Some are joyfully anticipated, like the birth of a baby. Some can seem rather daunting, like starting a new job or moving to a new country.
And some can hit us suddenly and with sadness, like the death of a loved one, losing your job, or the end of a relationship. These seem like the end rather than the beginning, but we need to move forward and discover what life will be like in this new stage.
There are many examples of stories and verses about new beginnings in the Bible.
Bible Stories about new beginnings
Scripture is full of stories about new beginnings:
- Creation
- After the fall
- After the flood
- Abraham’s promises from God
- Moses calling from God at the burning bush
- The Jewish exiles returning to Jerusalem and rebuilding the temple
- Jesus birth, death and resurrection all signal new beginnings
- and many encounters of people with Jesus brought about new beginnings
We can learn a lot from these stories and the examples set by the people involved. For each day of the New Beginnings Bible Study we will study a different story, looking at how the characters faced a new beginning, what we can learn from their experiences, and how we can apply it to our lives.
Bible Verses about New Beginnings
Scripture also includes a number of verses promising new life, or exhorting us to start over. For each day of the study we will also look at a verse that speaks of new beginnings with God. Here are a couple of examples:
- 2 Cor 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
- Ezek 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Eph 4:22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Lam 3: 22-23 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
