God’s Promises of Answered Prayer
Prayer is a key discipline of the Christian faith. God wants us to turn to him in time of need, because he alone can answer. God’s promises of answered prayer are found throughout the Bible, reminding us of the importance of prayer, and giving us encouragement and comfort when we face difficult times.
This Bible Reading Plan is the sixth in my series of Bible Plans on the Promises of God. Read on to download the 30 Day plan for this month, and to find links to the other plans.
Bible Verses on Answered Prayer
Unless otherwise stated the Scripture References are taken from the English Standard Version, with links to biblegateway.com. While referring to lots of different versions in my study, I generally use the ESV Women’s Study Bible.
Throughout God’s Word, in the Old and New Testaments we read that God answers prayers
God’s Promises of answered prayer
As I gathered together the verses from the Bible on answered prayer, some themes started to emerge. There were a number of promises that God often repeated: he hears, he knows, he answers and he provides.
Answered prayer: God listens and hears
God tells us that he hears us when we pray to him.
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. Jeremiah 29:12
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. Psalm 5:3
Answered prayer: Ask God and he will answer
God also promises that he will answer us when we ask.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
Answered prayer: Whatever you ask…
God not only promises to answer, but to give us whatever we ask! This seems rather incredible, but seven times in the New Testament we are told by Jesus that whatever we ask he will do.
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 1:13-14
Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. Matthew 18:19
Answered prayer: God knows our needs and desires
God also promises us in his word that he knows our needs and desires before we ask.
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:8
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3

Final thought on God’s Promises of Answered Prayer
The final verse I have chosen to reflect on today mentions the great power in our prayers. This is something we should not forget!
The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16
