God’s Promises of Forgiveness
We are continuing with our theme of the Promises of God for this month’s Bible Reading Plan. This month, in the lead up to Easter, we are focussing on God’s promises of forgiveness. God’s promise of forgiveness is repeated throughout the Bible. He offers us forgiveness, tells us our sins have been blotted out, and that we are blameless before him. Read on to discover some of these reassuring Bible verses and to download your free Bible Reading Plan of God’s Promises of Forgiveness.
Bible Verses on Forgiveness
Unless otherwise stated the Scripture References are taken from the English Standard Version, with links to biblegateway.com. While referring to lots of different versions in my study, I generally use the ESV Women’s Study Bible.
Forgiveness is a key part of the Christian faith. But, when we have done something wrong or fallen short we can often be filled with feelings of guilt and think it would be impossible to be forgiven. But, God understands this so he has given us plenty of promises in his word that he has and does forgive us.
God’s Promises on Forgiveness
In these Bible verses on forgiveness we learn that his forgiveness is complete. Our sins are washed away and forgotten, and we are cleansed and blameless before God.
God’s Promises of Forgiveness and cleansing
God uses some descriptive language to express to us that our sins are forgiven – they are cast into the sea; dissolved like mist; and removed as far as the east is from the west.
I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. Isaiah 43:25
I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” Jeremiah 31:34
God’s Promises of Forgiveness through the Blood of Christ
In the New Testament we see how this forgiveness is possible: through the sacrifice of the Son of God.
For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matt 26:28
How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:14
Are God’s promises of forgiveness conditional?
We do, however, also read that we have a part to play in our forgiveness. We must recognise that we have done something wrong, admit it to God and determine to change, with the help of God.
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chron 7:14
Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, Acts 3:19
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Final thought on God’s Promises of Forgiveness
The final verse I have chosen to reflect on today is one that not only speaks of God’s forgiveness of us, but also our forgiveness of others. We need to follow God’s example and also be forgiving, remembering how much he has forgiven us.
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 6:14
